ranty pants this morning~
One thing that really, really irritates me now more than ever, is the oversimplification of Asian culture. I can't stand certain stereotypes, good or bad about asain culture. Just like I can't stand stereotypes about American/Canadian/British/etc. culture. Seriously, don't garner all your information from media sources. It's fun to watch movies, tv, or read comics/books. Just don't believe everything you see or read.

I had a coworker last year who would consistently talk about US politics and the US. Unfortunately this individual seem to have garnered all his information from things like CNN and pop culture. Many times my Canadian coworker and I would have to gently break it to him to stuff it.

I feel that way about people who talk about places in Asia, like it's a mythical place.

Fact- Asain nations have lots of problems too. They have a lot of good points and bad points, just like back at home!

It's been bothering me for a couple of days. There was an article in the English language news paper a few days ago, by a moronic expat, telling about how western ideas (Like teh gays and all that) are destroying Korean society. How much better Korean society is to everywhere else, yada yada yada.

Then I woke up this morning to someone taking about Memoir's of a Geisha. That book irks me because geishas were almost never prostitutes. During the occupation, you could hire prostitutes that looked like geishas, but they were not geishas!

OMG, I'm so sick of it. And all of the "Anime-Japanese" people here. No, Anime is not what Japanese culture is like. And although it's kind of a cool way to get into it, it is not the be-all, end-all.

Plus, just because you watch anime and live and breathe anime doesn't mean you're Japanese and it doesn't make you an expert on Japan. -_-

I don't know why, but it really bothers me when people feel the need to dress in Japanese garb and pretend they like sake so they can be like the cartoon characters.

/rant

(oh, and addendum to rant, Manhwa, Korean comics, are not inferior because they're from Korea and not JApan, okay!? I love some Manhwa, and I'm not going to STOP reading them 'cause certain anime freaks think they're knock-offs!!!)

Ick. Yes. One of the reasons why I dislike Jonathan Ross, a self proclaimed 'otaku'. I find it revolting how some people refer to themselves as 'otaku's' given that the term has the same connotation as celebrity stalkers, or other people not in touch with reality. It's kind of funny, considering how much they like Japan.

I'm surprised to see people think Manhwa are inferior. I frankly don't know much about Korean comics, as I read manga when all borders carried were Sailor Moon, Pokemon and DBZ. I can see myself in the future, "I had to travel 30 miles, by gas powered cars to get to the nearest comic book shop that sold things like Blade of the Immortal!"

I think that will change in a few years (the manwha, not the anime geeks), as more and more Korean's enroll in US illustration programs and become a part of the US market (you see it starting now if you follow indie comics)

Anyways. :B Tacos. ^_^

Stereotypes are nearly always annoying. Sorry you've had to deal with some asshattery. ;/
